Rendering

​Rendering is essentially plastering on the exterior of a building. More accurately, it’s a form of cladding, and cladding is used on properties all over the world. Render is the most common form of cladding seen in the UK. Who hasn't seen pebble-dash on a suburban house ? But rendering is far more versatile than that. 

Rendering has always been popular in Britain, and for good reason. It’s a quick and relatively easy way to update the appearance or your house, and is generally maintenance free. It comes in a large range of finishes and colours and provides protection from the elements. It must be applied properly however, as badly applied render will fall off, and devalue your property. So always use professionals.

Which render should I choose ?

Cement Render
Cement render is the most common and most traditional form of render. It is relatively cheap to buy, but takes time to apply correctly. It is mixed onsite and applied in several layers. The top coat is smooth and shiny, and requires painting every few years in order to maintain a smart appearance. 

Polymer Render
Polymer render is a relatively new product and is designed to be superior to the more traditional methods. It contains polymers and plastic products to make it flexible, to avoid cracking, and for durability. It comes ready coloured, so there is no painting after its been applied. 

Acrylic Render
Acrylic render can be used to bring colour and texture to a surface. It is usually applied as a thin coat, to seal brickwork, It will seal and enhance the look of the underlying structure. It has additives to make it tough and flexible, and its is highly durable. A good choice. 

K-Rend
K-Rend are a British manufacturer, producing a superb range of modern silicone rendering products. Silicone render is very flexible and repels water. K-Rend products come in a massive range of finishes and an enormous range of colours. Its maintenance free and highly durable, lasting for 20-50 years, as long as its been professionally applied to a well prepared surface.

Lime Render
Lime plaster is a very traditional form of render, and was used for many hundreds of years throughout the UK. Even the Romans used lime render. It is breathable, like lime plaster, so is particularly appropriate for older properties, where a non-breathable render can be a disaster. Allowing the walls to breathe is essential for moisture transfer, and to prevent damp problems. Most properties built prior to 1920 were built needing to breathe moisture and damp away. If in doubt, its essential you seek professional advice.

​Lime render looks great. It will enhance any older property,  giving great texture and interest to a home. There are now a number of more modern versions of lime plaster, which include advanced plastics, polymers and silicons. These are easier to work with, and apply, so lime render will likely become more popular and more common in the future.
